⚠ THE BARRENS — CLOSED TO PUBLIC ⚠
The Barrens is an approximately 20-acre undeveloped area south of Derry Elementary School. The area has been closed to the public since June 1994 due to safety concerns.

Per Town Ordinance 94-17: Entering The Barrens is a civil infraction punishable by a fine of up to $200. Minors found on the property will be returned to parents, who may face additional fines.

Multiple trespassing incidents have been reported despite signage. The chain-link fencing installed July 1994 has been repeatedly damaged — most recently on October 6th, when a 40-foot section was found "pulled apart from the inside."

The Parks Department reminds residents: The Barrens is NOT a designated park or recreation area. The Kenduskeag passes through the area and several storm drain outflows feed directly into the stream. The terrain is unstable and contains hazardous waste from the former Kitchener Ironworks site.

If you observe trespassers, please call DPD at (207) 555-0191.

🪓 THE PAUL BUNYAN STATUE 🪓

PAUL BUNYAN
STATUE
Canal Street Park
1958
Photo c. 1985
Location: Canal Street Park
Erected: 1958
Height: 18 feet
Sculptor: William Macken

Derry's beloved Paul Bunyan statue is one of the town's most photographed landmarks. At 18 feet tall, our Paul Bunyan is the third-largest Paul Bunyan statue in New England!

The statue was erected in 1958 by the Derry Lions Club as a tribute to the town's logging heritage. Paul stands with his axe over his shoulder and greets visitors entering the Canal District.

FUN FACT: The statue weighs 4,800 pounds and is anchored to a concrete foundation that extends 12 feet underground.

(Note: The Parks Dept has received 12 reports this year of the statue "moving" or "facing a different direction." These reports are unfounded. Photos taken at different times of day under different lighting conditions can appear to show movement.)
